Journey towards a creative city

Research has shown that cities have the ability to create their own future by investing wisely in development features such as open spaces, unique architectural and urban solutions, dynamic street life, entertainment etc.

A group of five scholars of modern urbanism have worked in identifying the key features of a creative city.  They include development of ‘cultural zones’ which generate economic development. They say that research into the economic impact of culture clearly shows that both business and personal decisions are influenced by the strength of the local cultural sector.  The rest of the key features are  pleasant housing and ambiance, Informal art often in unexpected places which helps to create ‘social capital’, artistic dividend as a ‘hidden’ contribution to the economy different to the obvious gains from the consumption of culture.

They talk about Portland in Oregon as a good example of a creative and dynamic city and highlight a number its key features.
