On April 1, 2013, EXPEDITIO launched a painting competition with the topic “The Future I Want”. The competition is intended for primary and secondary school students. The competition is open for the students at 8th and 9th grades primary school and 1st and 2nd grades secondary school from the areas of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi. It is planned (but not obligatory) that the competition entries are prepared during regular art classes or art sessions, with the help of art teachers.
The painting competition “The Future I Want” is similar to other actions of this type. The idea is to encourage young people to express their ideas of the future and then to paint the most interesting and most inspiring ones in the form of murals on some of less attractive walls in public spaces in Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi (supporting walls, unkempt walls in suburban areas, etc.). The murals will be painted by young people whose works are selected during the competition. Young people will be given a chance to attend mural painting workshops that will be held during summer holidays and the beginning of autumn. The prize for young people, therefore, will be that their paintings become part of public spaces and in that way send to the citizens some positive and affirmative messages of the future they want.
The topic of competition has been selected purposefully. “The Future We Want“ is the document adopted by the United Nations in the summer 2012, following the UN World summit on sustainable development Rio+20 http://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/.In cooperation with the Division for the support to the National Council for Sustainable Development in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism (formerly the Office for Sustainable Development), Expeditio translated this document into Montenegrin language and published it. The aim of the painting competition is, therefore, to bring down the global principles of sustainable development to local level, in a creative way, and thus present them across broader public.
Sustainable development may be defined as “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs“. Children and young people are an integral part of the process of responsible use of resources, i.e. the natural and other assets we posses. Sustainable development does not apply to the natural environment alone. It is a complex concept that involves improving people’s education, health, nutrition, access to water, job security, and equality, while protecting waterways and oceans, biodiversity, forests, air quality and so on. The future we want are clean and sustainable cities, food, clean rivers and oceans, healthy environment, equality...
Expeditio is conducting the activity “The Future I Want” in cooperation with Local governments of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novog. It is implements as part of EXPEDITIO’s project “Promoting the Principles of Sustainable Development in Public Spaces of Boka Kotorska”, supported by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The activity is part of the Earth Month Calendar 2013.
