Charter of the Built Vernacular Heritage, of the International Council on Monuments and Sites - ICOMOS, is one of the few international documents that treats vernacular / rural heritage. This charter defines the principles for the protection of our vernacular built heritage.
Built vernacular heritage is important; it is the basic expression of the culture of a community, its relationship with its own territory and, at the same time, expression of the cultural diversity of the world.
Vernacular architecture is traditional and natural way in which communities provide housing. It is an ongoing process that includes the necessary changes and continuously adapt in response to the social and natural constraints. The survival of this tradition is threatened by worldwide forces of economic, cultural and architectural homogenization. Dealing with these forces is a fundamental problem that must be dealt by the community and government, planners, architects, conservators and multidisciplinary group of experts.
Within the project "Valuation of the Vernacular Heritage of Montenegro", The Charter of the Built Vernacular Heritage has been translated from English to Montenegrin and now is available on the website.
